5 out of 5 stars A great GPS at a very good price   February 26, 2009

I bought this refurbished unit from Amazon which was delivered on Feb 20th, I had the weekend to update and test it and have been using it daily since.

    The unit:

No scratches or blemishes on the unit, as good as a new unit. All features worked for me. The battery seems to hold the charge pretty well, not really tested it for the duration but my guess is 3-4 hours which for a refurbished unit is good enough for me. In the following weeks I amy know exactly how long the battery lasts.

    Maps:

The maps were old but after connecting to Tom Tom Home and clicking on "Latest Map Guarantee" it searched for the latest map and offered it as a free update! Not sure why others are reporting that they cannot update it.

    FM Transmitter:

Some complained about FM transmitter being weak, not here, it worked great and the volume was more than adequate, those who complain should try a different frequency as some do produce a weak signal. I found that the volume of about 70% is the best when one uses it from line out in order to avoid the distortion setting in on the output side.

    IQ Routes and speed:

The IQ Routes seem to work great and so does the re-routing speed if you miss a turn, which in my opinion is really quick (5-6 seconds at the most).

Once I happen to be in a friends car in an unfamiliar territory and remember his Gamin Street Pilot took almost few minutes to recalculate the missed turn and come up with a revised route, by that time we were way off course and wasted not just time but gas too. Since then I was totally turned off by Garmin and decided will only get a Tom Tom. I cannot say what a latest Garmin does since I have not come across one. In any case, Map Share technology was important to me and Tom Tom offers it.

I had bought another Tom Tom back in January Model 125 for my son as his birthday present, it does not have all the bells and whistles which the Go 730 has but does the basic job as quickly as the Go 730.

    Memory:

The built-in memory is 2 GB and when I checked it initially it was showing as 138 MB free. Basically that means you will not be able to use it for music. I had ordered a 4 GB SDHC card to go with it and used that to load the music I wanted to. You can use the free space on the card to store additional things like, voices, symbols, maps, etc I would advise anyone to get an additional card as it does come in handy and in future you know you have space in case you need it. A 4 GB SDHC card can be bought from Amazon at a great price.

    Advance Lane guidance:

This is a great feature and works very well on some busy junctions so it can come in very handy when you are out of town in an unfamiliar territory and have no clue which exit to take and which to avoid. Even if you go wrong the unit is very fast in recalculating a new route for you so that you can make amends and be back on track.

The price of a brand new Go 730 is fully justified even today, the refurbished one on the other hand, is a steal! Go for the Go!

    Update March 1, 2009:

The computer voice if chosen produces slight stuttering on occasions as reported by some. I switched to recorded voice and no issues on that one. Tom Tom is apparently working on this and an update may solve the issue.

I found the screen to be slightly less bright in direct sun than what I ideally would have wanted. Inside the car it is more than adequate.

Despite the two anomalies that I discovered while in use I still think it is a great GPS even if not 100% perfect. Come to think of it, there is no GPS out there which is 100% perfect! All are compromised, some like the Go 730 less so.

    5 out of 5 stars What a great value!   February 26, 2009

I was a little hesitant on buying a refurb, however I couldn't be happier with my TomTom GPS! Not a single scratch or blemish on the device. All the cables and manuals were in new shrink wrap. I powered it up right out of the box and it worked perfectly. I connected it to Home on my computer and it immediately installing updates. If you are on the fence about buying a refurb just buy it, Amazon has a 30 day return policy and TomTom has a 6 month warranty on refurbs (1-year for new)! I am absolutely happy with my purchase!

Note: Be sure to do a full backup of the device through explorer (just copy all the files and folders somewhere on your hard drive, make sure you can see hidden files and folders). Do this before any updates. Also, TomTom changed their corporate policy at the beginning of 2009 regarding Latest Maps Guarantee for refurbs. They are no longer offering this to refurbs. However my device came with a map that is only one version behind the current and I am completely happy with it.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome GPS   March 12, 2009

This is my 3rd GPS I have gone through! And it's the best one so far. The first one was a Garmin and it was OK. The second was a Navigon, and that was the worst one I have brought. It took forever to get a signal and recalculating a route. Even though this is a refurbished tomtom, it works the best thus far. Re-routing is fast and getting a signal is awesome, I can almost get signals anywhere, even in my basement! I think the best feature on this tomtom730 is the voice recording. I have recorded my 2 years old son's voice and am using it. It's kinda funny everytime I hear him on the device telling me to turn left or right and the best is making a U-turn! I guess you have to hear it. The big screen and the bluetooth capability is great. And the map sharing is also an awesome feature! I just hope everyone and anyone who has this feature on their tomtom care to make the changes and upload it to tomtom's services/servers so we all can benifit from it and maybe we don't have to buy their expensive updates. All in all this tomtom has been great, even though I have only have it for a month it hasn't given me any problems but the joy of using it. And oh, the battery life so far has last a lot better then I thought. I would really recommend this refurbished GPS!

5 out of 5 stars Latest Map Guarantee/getting latest map for a refurbished unit   July 26, 2009

I see lot of good reviews about everything else and the only confusing area that I thought I could contribute on is the "latest map guarantee" or "getting the latest map for a refurbished unit".
Here are the steps of how I got the latest map:
    1) I bought a refurbished tomtom go 730 from amazon and it did NOT come with any "latest map guarantee" card
    2) I connected my unit to my computer and downloaded "tomtom home"
    3) I clicked on the "Use latest map guarantee" under "tools" menu. I got the message "latest map guarantee expired".
    4) I clicked on "Log In" under "File" menu.
    5) I created a tomtom user using my personal e-mail id and logged in(I also set tomtom home to login upon starting it(also I set: remember my userid and psswd). I saw that my email started showing up on the right top corner of tomtom home.
    6) I clicked on "Update my GO" and it downloaded/installed quickGPSfix etc..
    7) I disconnected my device from the menu and then physically and logged out.
** I called tomtom cust-serv # 2 times on a weekend and was on hold for 1/2 hour each time. Bummer. Would've felt better if I got someone from a cheapo call center from elsewhere in the world rather than waste an hour. Hear that Tom's mom or Mr. Tomtom?
    8) Few hours later I logged back in and connected my tomtom to my computer
    9) Clicked on copy to computer (to ensure that I backed up all required files)
    10) I ensured that I'm logged into my tomtom home account(email at right top corner)
    11) I tried the "use latest map guarantee" under "tools" and it asked me to click on latest "US/canada map" box to get a check mark and click on "install it now". I did and it worked. It took about an hour to go thru the installation process. tomtom picked where it left off even though my internet connection dropped couple of times. I got map version 8.351 US/Canada.
    12) I then went on to get the latest from map-share.

For those that didnt get the maps, I think that (a) you have to be logged into tomtom home and (b) you have to give it couple of hours (sometimes)after creation of tomtom home user.

Hope the review increases the success factor of "getting the latest map".

    5 out of 5 stars Tom Tom GO 730   March 29, 2009

Purchased as a refurbished unit. Works & Looks great. GPS function is excellent. Member to member updates provide current map changes. Easy to use. I like to listen to old time radio so i have stored mp3 shows and play back while on the road; meanwhile the TOMTOM is tracking my destination. Map updates occur 4 times a year at a reasonable price, not like Garmin which occurs once a year. Try a Tom Tom GO 730 you'll like it.
